Apex Predator – Jesus Wept

Rhetorically speaking, what’s the opposite of P.M.A.? Would it be N.M.A. – Negative Mental Attitude? Well, if N.M.A. is a thing (if not, N.M.A™), then Apex Predator are some of the foremost purveyors.

This album is resplendent with two steps, breakdowns, growls, grunts, gang vocals, and violence. This is a cup of tea best served scalding and thrown in the face of your enemy.

Jesus Wept begins with a literal announcement of who you are listening to and how they feel about the world and everyone in it. Vocalist Casey Shaw emulates Paul Bearer most times and peppers in Stikman-esque melodies every now and then. It is the perfect delivery system for the active nihilism and general disdain found in his lyrics.

Rare are the moments that Jesus Wept lets up. It is an incessant barrage of anger, frustration, and misanthropy. It is the soundtrack to a deadlift PR.

If Jarhead Fertilizer’s Carceral Warfare is the soundtrack to a prison riot, then Jesus Wept is the soundtrack to the beatdown that landed you in prison. Respectfully, of course.

  • Fav song: “Nothing”

FFO: Beatdown, beatdowns, two steps, dark alleys, negative mental attitude, chef’s kiss guitar and bass tone, and empty bottles breaking on the street.
